Even When The Nest Is Covered In Snow, The Mother Eagle Guards Her Kids

A bald eagle exemplifies all that mothers do to maintain and safeguard their children. Despite the cold, Bella, a mother eagle in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, strives to keep her eggs warm. She doesn’t mind being completely engulfed in snow to protect her children.

Bella and her mate, Smitty, returned to their nest, which is 100 feet high in an outstanding huge sycamore tree near the Potomac River, to raise their offspring, as they have done every year since 2011.

Both parents take turns caring for the eggs, although the female eagle spends around 80% of her time sitting at the nest, while the male goes hunting and fishing.

On Facebook, Randy Robinson, a National Conservation Training Center instructional systems expert, said:

“Eagles make excellent parents. They sit on the eggs at all hours of the day and night, seven days a week.’

When eagles lay their eggs, they are prepared to withstand a variety of harsh circumstances, from snow and hail to freezing rain and other forms of adverse weather.

As a result, even during a heavy snowfall, the mother eagle does not leave the nest and continues to guard her babies.

Randy also elaborated:

“They mate and lay their eggs very early in the year, in January or February, so the weather is quite terrible with snow and ice, like we have had here in the previous two weeks.” The benefits of laying their eggs early include the fact that the young hatch quickly. And there will be plenty of food when these babies arrive in mid-March.’
