Raccoon Is Orphaned And Lives With Dogs, Believing She Is One Of Them

Rosie Kemp’s garden was invaded by an odd bundle late last year: a month-old raccoon.

She was frail, having fractured her rear leg. Kemp waited for the raccoon’s mother to arrive, but when she didn’t, she decided to take her in.

Kemp lives in Nassau, Bahamas, where raccoon ownership is permitted and there are no raccoon rescues. Kemp and her daughter, Laura Young, treated the little cub as one of their own, determined to give her the best opportunity possible. They fed Pumpkin, the cub, every several hours around the clock and kept her warm and comfortable, exactly as her mother would.

“It was (and still is) a full-time job raising her,” Young told The Dodo. “They are incredibly bright, well-aware, and I believe they can even convey emotions.”

Pumpkin now lives with Young, William, and their two rescue dogs, and she looks to be as content as can be. Young and her friends publish images of Pumpkin’s everyday existence on her Instagram account, which chronicles her experiences.

And, being a raccoon, she has to be involved in everything that happens…
