Jake has been with his family since he was a puppy, and he is roughly 6 years old. Jake acquired glaucoma in his eyes about two years ago and is now entirely blind. He nevertheless manages to move around rather well, and at times appears to forget that he is blind.
Jake has always had a strong bond with his entire family, and now that he’s blind, he’s created some unique ways of ensuring they’re always close by.
Jake knew exactly where everyone in his family was at all times when he still had his sight. He still wants to know where everyone is, even when he can’t see…
…so he’s devised the cutest method of “checking in” to ensure that the people he cares about are still close.
Jake will occasionally walk over to one of his family members and place his face in their lap or right up in their face to comfort himself that they haven’t left him alone. He does it as often as every five minutes at times, yet his family is never irritated. They never fail to tell him that he is cherished and secure.
Jake’s father, Leo Fernandes, told The Dodo, “He doesn’t just put his face around you, he also gives his paw to nothing until someone catches his paw mid-air.”
Jake will always locate someone, no matter where they are in the home…
… all in the name of love, and invading their personal space.
“Even though he can climb stairs, he just waits for me to carry him up and down the stairs when I take him for a stroll,” Fernandes said. “He’s the most laid-back dog I’ve ever seen.”
