After Bringing In Shelter Cats, The Prison Sees A Change In The Prisoners

Cats are amazing creatures. For over a decade, they have gotten a lot of attention on the internet, and as time has passed, they have gotten more and more attention in the real world.

This might be due to the therapeutic advantages of spending time with cats. In the last five years, a slew of cat cafés has popped up all over the world.

This might be because cats make humans happy. When a jail in Indiana took in cats from a shelter, they observed firsthand the impact their choice had on the convicts.

The Animal Protection League and the Pendleton Correctional Facility in Indiana launched the F.O.R.W.A.R. program in 2015.

The idea behind the program

The idea behind the initiative was to rescue cats from a shelter and place them in the hands of convicts at the correctional facility. This was a win-win situation for all parties concerned.

Because of their mistreatment, many of the cats in the shelter had turned antisocial.

This has made it difficult for them to be adopted. This program assists them in regaining their confidence in others, making it simpler for them to find a home.

As the convicts clean, groom, and feed the cats, the animals develop more trust in people.

Inmates can also learn how to care for another living thing through this program.

Maleah Stringer, the director of APL, stated, “I’ve had offenders tell me that when they received an animal, it was the first time they could remember allowing themselves to care about something, to love something.”

The APL states on its website, “It teaches them responsibility, how to engage in a group utilizing nonviolent means to solve problems, and provides them the unconditional love of a pet — something many of these convicts have never felt.”

This program has been so effective that it has spawned a slew of copycat initiatives around the country.

“The MCKC Program has decreased offenders’ laziness, given their responsibility, and boosted their self-esteem. Offenders have been encouraged to enroll in school, find work, follow unit regulations, and improve their cleanliness to become MCKC members from the program’s start. The presence of animals on E Unit has brought a new sense of serenity to the therapeutic environment and increased the sense of community,” Purrfect Pals express themselves on their website.
