Baby Rhino Snuggles Under His Blanket … Until It’s Bottle Time

Kitui is a baby black rhino who sleeps under his blanket every night.

After a long day playing in mud puddles on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Kitui comes back to his bed and settles in.

Kitui is being raised by the kind keepers at Lewa because his blind mother was unable to protect her previous babies from predators, and black rhinos are getting rarer and rarer. “He is one of Kenya’s estimated 640 critically endangered black rhino,” Wanjiku Kinuthia, of Lewa, told The Dodo. “Every individual counts in ensuring the species survives.”

When Kitui is old enough, at 3 or 4 years, he’ll be released back into the wild. Until then, young Kitui is an expert at enjoying the moment.

Kitui sleeps in a pen right next to where his keepers sleep and they check on him throughout the night. Under his blanket and in his bed of hay, he seems completely at peace.

He only gets up when his keeper comes by with a snack.
